"The Oxford Herald"

 
The Society's emblem is based upon a sketch made by Sir Peter Lely in the 1660's, of a Pursuivant (one of the junior rank of heralds at the College of Arms) in procession for the ceremony of the Order of the Garter, still held annually on St George's Day. The original is in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

 

As sketched by Lely, his tabard bears the Royal Arms, as heralds' tabards do to this day - in his case the arms of King Charles II. We have redecorated it with the arms of the University, to symbolise the study of his craft at Britain's premier seat of learning.
